About Us

Established in 1885 by Edward E. Betts, Betts Engineering has played an important role in the development of the Chattanooga area. Nineteenth-century projects included participating in the original design of the Walnut Street Bridge, layout of the roadways and monuments at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, design and construction oversight of Wilder Tower at the park and of a trolley system linking the park to downtown Chattanooga. In the twentieth century, Betts remained involved in infrastructure improvements and downtown revitalization efforts. A sample of projects from that era included civil design and landscape architecture for Miller Park, improvements to Market Street and Broad Street, two of downtown Chattanooga's main thoroughfares, historic restoration and improvements to Fortwood Historic Neighborhood and Park, civil design and landscape architecture for an expansion and renovation of the Chattanooga National Cemetery, extensive site planning for new athletic facilities at the McCallie School, and a multitude of new residential subdivisions.

In the twenty-first century, Betts Engineering continues a tradition of improving the quality of life for people in the Chattanooga area. We have provided infrastructure improvement design for surrounding communities such as Signal Mountain, East Ridge, Walden's Ridge, Mowbray Mountain, and Riceville, Tennessee; sewer relocation design in conjunction with numerous state and federal highway expansion projects; civil site planning and surveying for Cummings Cove and Tauqueta Falls, two luxury golf course communities currently under development; landscape architecture for several area churches; civil and landscape design for planned improvements to Market Street; a streetscape design for improvements to the historic downtown district of the City of Chickamauga, Georgia; site planning for three city parks; and site planning for tennis facilities at Rivermont and Warner Parks.

We believe that even small projects deserve the same meticulous care and attention as do our largest and most demanding jobs. Thus, in addition to projects of the scope of the 1996 Olympics-Ocoee Whitewater Venue, we also maintain a base of residential and commercial work, from investigating and mitigating homeowners' flooding problems to providing site planning for convenience stores, restaurants, and manufacturing facilities.

Betts Engineering currently has a staff of 19 and offers expertise in civil engineering, landscape architecture and surveying. We have established working relationships with architects, professionals in other engineering specialties, soil scientists, nursery owners, and general contractors. We are familiar with local building codes and regulatory agency requirements. And we are fully equipped with the most current design software and electronic surveying equipment in order to remain responsive to our clients’ needs.
